Using the industry standard XDD benchmark, Terascala, the leader in Fast Data storage management, validated that the single VNX7500 delivers up to 8 GB/s read and 5.3 GB/s write sustained performance on a 4U dual storage processor with the Lustre file system. The benchmark results validate the EMC VNX7500 and its ability to deliver the industry’s most reliable—with five-9’s availability—and powerful unified storage system complete with global support, delivering the raw performance required in HPC environments—with “no compromise”. (See related EMC news at SC’11).

The EMC VNX7500 is powered by the latest multi-core Intel Xeon processor 5600 series and delivers HPC customers the option to leverage enterprise Flash drives and the FAST Suite, where Flash can be efficiently used as both a high performance storage tier and as a caching tier. Additionally, a dual VNX7500/single rack solution that can deliver up to 16GB/s sustained read performance and has the flexibility to support up to 1.6PBs—is ideal for customers looking for a high density solution, or with large amounts of data. The sheer throughput that the VNX7500 delivers to HPC customers using Lustre is ideal for environments where a high, single stream of performance is required—most often in universities and laboratories, core IT applications for, life sciences and supercomputing environments.

EMC will be demonstrating a proof-of-concept that includes the VNX7500 and a Terascala Integrated Storage Information System (TISIS™) appliance in a Lustre environment in the EMC Isilon booth (#2609) and Intel booth (#2121) at SC11.

Continuing to build momentum for its “Big Data” analytics solutions, EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today introduced the EMC® Greenplum® Modular Data Computing Appliance (DCA), the industry’s first complete Big Data analytics platform. Available now, the Greenplum DCA features a revolutionary modular architecture that for the first time allows enterprises to combine a shared-nothing MPP relational database with enterprise-class Apache Hadoop – along with Greenplum partner BI and ELT applications – to achieve true structured and unstructured data co-processing, and expand it gracefully as needed in a single, unified platform.

DCA modules enable enterprises to completely change how they think about scaling by providing the ability to start small and expand the appliance in more flexible and cost-effective quarter-rack increments based on processing performance or storage capacity needs. In addition to mixing and matching Greenplum Database and Greenplum HD (Hadoop) modules, enterprises can also bring all their BI applications and ELT tools directly into the cluster, in the same DCA, through the use of new Greenplum Data Integration Accelerator modules. The result is a unified Big Data platform combining structured and unstructured data and applications in a single infrastructure that is also monitored, managed and supported by EMC.

Today, enterprises are seeking to make better use of their data warehouses for advanced analytics, and this trend will accelerate as organizations strive to move from running business intelligence point solutions to deploying comprehensive analytics enterprise-wide. At the same time, enterprises are placing greater importance on integrating and analyzing their accumulation of their unstructured and semi-structured data. But as data warehouses get bigger, enterprises are facing scalability, performance degradation and management complexity, and are seeking ways to enable more concurrent users to access the data for business applications.

Four Greenplum Data Computing Appliance modules are available today:

The Greenplum Database Module is a purpose-built, highly scalable data-warehousing appliance module that architecturally integrates database, computing, storage and network into an enterprise-class, easy-to-implement system. It is the industry leader in price and performance.

The Greenplum Database High Capacity Module is designed to host multi-petabytes of data without surging power consumption, increasing costs or mushrooming space. For businesses that require detailed analysis of extremely large amounts of data or those looking for a longer term archive, this high-capacity version offers the lowest cost-per-unit data warehouse.

The Greenplum HD Module is the world’s first high-performance data co-processing Hadoop appliance module. It marries Hadoop with the Greenplum Database, allowing true co-processing of both structured and unstructured data within a single, seamless solution.

The Greenplum Data Integration Accelerator (DIA) Module hosts partner analytics applications and places them directly on the same high performance, low latency interconnect as the other appliance modules. This enables market-leading data loading performance in a parallel and scalable model, to shorten batch loads or implement micro-batch loading.

Enterprises can start with a single, primary rack, which includes a single standard or high-capacity Greenplum Database quarter-rack module and room for three additional modules, as well as two master servers that are responsible for authentication, optimizing the query, balancing the workload among the different segment servers, managing the fault tolerant mechanism of data and other tasks for the cluster. Enterprises may expand the appliance in quarter-rack increments using Greenplum Database, Greenplum HD or Greenplum DIA modules in any order and amount, up to six racks total as their demand for processing capacity grows. All modules are linked via a redundant, high-performance, low-latency interconnect.

This new release of the Greenplum DCA also includes increased high availability and simple integration with EMC’s market-leading solutions for data protection and disaster recovery. High availability is addressed via automated master-node fail-over and the Greenplum Database High Availability Group, enabling each full-rack DCA to sustain up to four server failures, one in each HA Group, nearly doubling the high availability rate. It also integrates with industry-leading EMC Data Domain® deduplication and backup technology from high speed backup and restore and wide area disaster recovery. The Greenplum DCA SAN Mirror Solution uses EMC Symmetrix® VMAX™, TimeFinder®/Snap and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF®) for advanced storage and data replication between two sites in synchronous mode.

HOPKINTON, MASS., September 15, 2011 – EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced its new 450,000 square foot Center of Excellence (COE) in Durham, North Carolina, which will deliver on and demonstrate the promise of cloud computing and IT as a Service (ITaaS) for EMC and its customers. In addition to housing a highly-virtualized cloud data center that supports EMC’s more than 50,000 employees around the globe, the COE includes 130,000 square feet of global research and development labs and will be a technology showcase to help EMC customers accelerate their own cloud computing and IT transformations.

EMC’s facility in Durham is the latest facility in the company’s global network of COEs, which are located in India, China, Egypt, Israel, Ireland, and Russia. The Centers of Excellence perform essential services for EMC business units, including engineering and research and development, customer service, translation services, IT and technical support, and customer executive briefings.

Like many organizations, EMC was faced with unrelenting information growth; inefficient IT infrastructure utilization; increasingly complex application environments; and congested, energy-exhausting data centers. In response, in 2004, EMC’s IT organization began moving from a physical to a highly-virtualized IT infrastructure and embarking on what would become its multi-year cloud computing strategy to transform how IT is delivered and consumed through ITaaS. To accelerate this transformation, the company built a new, energy-efficient cloud data center in Durham, North Carolina.

Well on its way to pervasive virtualization, the new EMC data center provides the foundation required for cloud computing with an architecture that will leverage EMC’s latest information infrastructure technologies, VMware virtualization and cloud infrastructure technologies, and Vblock™ Infrastructure Platforms from VCE, the Virtual Computing Environment Company formed by Cisco and EMC with investments from VMware and Intel.

Through the EMC IT Proven program, which chronicles and shares IT and cloud computing best practices, the new data center will also serve as a technology showcase for EMC’s customers. The company will hold customer briefings and tours of its new Durham data center to share best practices and demonstrate firsthand how EMC, VMware, VCE and other partner technologies can help accelerate their own IT transformations.

SALT LAKE CITY– Aug. 4, 2011 – Fusion-io, Inc. (NYSE: FIO), a provider of a next-generation shared data decentralization platform, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire IO Turbine, Inc., a provider of caching solutions for virtual environments. Under terms of the agreement, Fusion-io will pay up to approximately $95 million, subject to purchase price adjustments, for all outstanding securities of IO Turbine. The consideration is payable in cash and stock, provided that the cash portion may not exceed $35 million. The transaction is expected to close by the end of August 2011, subject to final closing conditions.

The acquisition is a key part of Fusion’s strategy to enable enterprise customers to increase the utilization, performance and efficiency of their datacenter resources and extract greater value from their information assets. Having partnered closely for a number of months, Fusion-io and IO Turbine have a shared philosophy for solving datacenter inefficiencies. The integration of IO Turbine’s software into Fusion’s platform will enable traditional storage infrastructures to keep up with the increasing demands of virtualized servers and expands Fusion’s market opportunities to both new and existing customers.

“IO Turbine’s software is uniquely architected to take advantage of flash memory in the server to solve the I/O bottlenecks, the inhibitor to the adoption of enterprise virtualization,” said David Flynn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fusion-io. “We believe integrating ioMemory and IO Turbine adds a critical and previously missing performance component to virtualized IT environments that will accelerate the adoption of Fusion-io technology. This acquisition also underscores our focus on providing customers with an enterprise solution that features software and hardware components designed to accelerate their business’ full suite of applications.”

San Jose, California-based IO Turbine was founded to address data supply constraints in virtual environments. While adoption and affordability of flash technologies has provided performance advances in virtualization, effective utilization of flash storage in a shared, virtualized environment has remained complex.

The IO Turbine software takes advantage of flash local to the server, delivering improved performance for virtualized workloads by holding data close to where it is used. This approach avoids the need for expensive performance-oriented networked storage systems and memory appliances that struggle to deliver performance from the far end of a network, instead allowing enterprises to use cost optimized shared storage systems. The marriage of ioMemory and IO Turbine software improves ROI by increasing the number of virtual machines per physical server. Moreover, this makes it feasible to virtualize data intensive applications that were previously difficult to migrate to virtualized environments while maintaining performance. Enterprises will be able to virtualize their entire suite of applications and finally realize the benefit of running a single unified virtualized environment.

“In addition to delivering performance that finally unleashes the potential of virtualization, we believe the combined Fusion-io and IO Turbine solution will also boost efficiency by reducing the costs associated with running expensive backend shared storage, as well as extend the lifespan of enterprises’ current storage area networks.” noted Rich Boberg, CEO of IO Turbine. “By integrating the IO Turbine virtualization software with Fusion’s ioMemory platform, we believe enterprises will finally be able to accelerate even the most I/O intensive applications in virtualized environments.”

At closing, Fusion-io will add approximately 20 IO Turbine employees to its engineering team, with an additional approximately five employees across other areas.
